Unlike other fancy colored In nature which are exposed to nitrogen particles during formation, the color distortion that creates pink diamonds occurs when the carbon atoms of the crystal structure of a diamond are exposed to immense heat (the conditions found in Australia’s Argyle mine (more on that later) have been described as volcanic.) and intense pressure from the Earth itself. The pressure the stones are under and the trace elements they are exposed to distort the positions of the carbon atoms to leave their original spots changing how light is reflected in the diamond itself. Natural pink loose diamonds can be found all over the world, but the largest cache in the world can be found in the Argyle mine in Western Australia. Some of the most expensive pink diamonds ever sold were the very famous 59.60-carat Fancy Vivid Pink diamond called the Pink Star sold at $72 billion to Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. Diamond prices have increased about 500% since the year 2000 and 2020 since the Argyle Mine was shut down on November 3rd of that same year. The short supply has increased the rarity of pink diamonds according to the Rio Tinto Group, which previously owned and operated the mine.

The GIA Grading System for Color Diamonds
Circling back to the science of diamonds, the GIA system is the most well-known and respected grading system for all natural diamonds. According to this system, both colorless and naturally fancy colored diamonds are graded based on the 4Cs: color, clarity, cut, and carat.
One colorless diamond receives a letter grade that can be anywhere between D to Z. While D is the highest grade for a colorless diamond (indicating that a diamond has nearly no color and appears colorless both when viewed with the naked eye and under magnification) Z refers to diamonds that have the most presence of a color (e.g. light yellow or brown) for a colorless stone.
Colored diamonds can be found at the lower end of this spectrum. Just like what makes a wearer unique, the more perfect imperfections that are found in pink diamonds are what makes them desirable truly one-of-a-kind. While Cynthia Britt Jewelry is created knowing that while no color or style is necessarily better than another, colored diamonds are fascinating since they are referred to on the color-grading charts by words as opposed to a letter scale. Furthermore, the intensity of the color is provided where the lowest grade is Very Faint to the highest color intensity grade possible is either Fancy Vivid or Fancy Deep.
The Argyle Grading System
The Argyle Pink Diamond Grading Chart
The Argyle mine, the formerly leading name in pink diamonds, is responsible for creating a very well-respected diamond grading system of their own. Although many stones are assessed by GIA to please the jewelry industry, the Argyle certificate is what holds the stone’s true value.
According to the Argyle grading system, pink diamonds are divided into 4 color categories: “Purplish Pink� (PP), “Pink� (P), “Pink Rose� (PR), and “Pink Champagne� (PC). Then, each category is given a number between 1 and 9 (except for PCs which go until 3) based on its color intensity. The highest color intensity is 1 whereas the lowest is 9. For example, the highest quality Argyle purplish-pink diamond would be a 1PP, the highest pink would be a 1P, the highest pink rose would be a 1PR, and the pink champagne diamond with the highest color intensity level would be a 1PC3. When one purchases an Argyle pink diamond, he or she is often provided with both a GIA certificate and an Argyle certificate.
