Sarah Art-Deco Inspired Engagement Ring

Sarah and her incredibly inspired fiancé came to have an engagement ring custom made for Sarah’s own heirloom diamond! Sarah’s diamond given to her by her mom is a beautiful Old-European cut diamond and it was set in a 14k yellow gold setting. Here’s the image of the ring before I took it apart:

Sarah’s Heirloom Ring

Sarah wanted to have her heirloom diamond set in a newly re-designed engagement ring that would have platinum on top half and re-use her mom’s yellow gold for the bottom half! Sarah is a lovey, bright-eyed, incredibly intelligent young lady with a stylish short haircut! The tip of her finger tips are slightly more straight than curved. We went over a few designs that Sarah had in mind with step down baguettes on the sides. I suggested an octagon-shape center which would be very complementary to her hand structure. We decided to put three straight-cut baguettes on either side of the center that would be graduating in size. Sarah’s fiancé suggested a very interesting, Art-Deco inspired cut-out gallery work for the sides of the ring.

My first step was to find straight-cut baguettes that would be in three different sizes and two of each size! Once I picked out the six baguettes that I needed, I started calculating the center space where the octagon will be. In order to create a beautiful balance between the center octagon and the graduating baguettes, I made a very refined double frame for the center diamond. Then based on the height that I needed to achieve all the open side gallery work, I made the step-down shape for the baguettes. The last step in making the center was the detailed work for the sides. I finished the center section of the ring with open gallery work, Art-Deco inspired!

Once I cast the center section in platinum, then I melted Sarah’s old ring and re-shaped it to fit the bottom half of her engagement ring. Here’s a side view showing the mix of top platinum section with its open gallery work and the bottom yellow gold section, re-shaped and re-used!
