Every custom made engagement ring has its unique story. Lauren’s engagement ring has a romantic one! It is a surprise engagement ring, with the difference that I have not met Lauren’s fiancé! It all started with a mutual contact here in Boston. Lauren’s fiancé lives out-of-state and wanted to surprise his girlfriend by proposing in Paris!
He went to a few local jewelry stores that he knew of, but not knowing enough about diamonds and really what kind of a ring his girlfriend would like, it wasn’t an easy process. One of his best friends who lives here on Newbury Street and is familiar with my work, recommended him to call me. During our initial phone conversation, he told me a little about Lauren, her likes and dislikes and he also mentioned that she would prefer a vintage look with engraving versus a contemporary ring or an engagement ring that was all about the center stone.
Making of a Vintage Inspired Surprise Engagement Ring
As for all surprise engagement rings that I make, I asked him to send me a few pictures of Lauren, so I can get a better idea of her personality and style. One of the images had Lauren’s hand in view. From that image, I suggested that a cushion cut diamond would be most suitable for her. Lauren is gorgeous, she has long beautiful hair and she looks super intelligent. In addition to her fiancés suggestion of having engraving, I recommended a ring that would have multiple components. Next, I sketched a few designs based on my inspiration of Lauren incorporating a cushion shape diamond. Then based on the budget that I was working with, I looked for a few cushion cut diamonds.
Here are three loose, GIA certified, colorless diamond that I picked out. Two cushion cuts and one radiant cut in the middle. I emailed my sketches and copies of the GIA certificates for each diamond to Lauren’s fiancé and through numerous emails, phone calls and texts we went over each design and what it would look like. I also showed my suggested designs and the loose stones to our mutual contact, here in Boston, so she could also be involved in helping out Lauren’s fiancé. Once Lauren’s fiance was comfortable and had all the information regarding the design and the diamond, he picked out the most beautiful cushion cut diamond from the above choices and the following design:
The cushion shape diamond sits in a cushion frame and it’s four-prong set. There’s a brilliant cut diamond set on the band, on either side of the center stone. I made a separate design that rises up from both sides of the band and forms a soft “U” on top of the band. The “U” shape complements the cushion cut diamond and begins the beautiful hand engraving that follows its angle and shape from the sides of the band rising up to the top of the band.
Here’s a side view:
Here’s a perspective view showing the one-of-a-kind hand engraving rising from the sides and merging on top.
I completed Lauren’s surprise engagement ring well in time and shipped it to her fiancé. Once they were in the Magical city of Paris, Lauren’s fiancé created the most romantic moment as he opened the box and popped the most beautiful question to Lauren!
Congratulations to both of you! It was a great pleasure for me to create your gorgeous engagement ring!
