Sapphire And Diamond Engagement Ring For Nicole

It is an incredibly rewarding feeling for me to make a ring that is the person's dream ring. Nicole and her finacé-to-be came for a platinum sapphire and diamond engagement ring that would be different from the ready-made engagement rings that they had already seen. They sent me a few images so I would know the style that Nicole likes. First step was to bring in sapphires. Everything starts from the center stone and it's very important for the shape of the center stone to match the shape of the hand and fingers. It is also very important to see the gems loose and in natural light, so you know exactly what you're getting. Here's an image of the different sapphires on Nicole's hand:

It's my mission to source out the right gems for your request. For Nicole, one cushion cut and three different shapes of ovals. Best way to see what shape of stone will look the best, is to put the loose gem on your hand. A narrow hand will look better with a slightly fuller looking stone. How the finger tips end is also very important in determining the shape of the stone. Rounded finger tips look better with round and oval cut stones. More even ending finger tips, such as Nicole's, will look better with wide cut ovals and cushion cuts.

We eliminated one of the sapphires, and the choice was between the traditional cut oval, the modified oval ( the wider one ) and the cushion cut. The image below, shows Nicole's choices:

Nicole wanted something interesting and different for the side diamonds. So I brought in Cadillac shape diamonds. Below is an image of the pair of Cadillac cuts:

They are both colorless Cadillac cut diamonds. The left one is a classic Cadillac and the right one is slightly larger. It was definitely a tough choice between all of the gems, but Nicole picked out the modified oval sapphire with the classic cut Cadillacs, with 0.41 carat total weight. The modified oval is a gorgeous 2.81 carat gem sapphire from Madagascar with EGL certificate. Now that we had the top main gems chosen, I sketched a design that would incorporate the gems and also, something that was Nicole's unique style. Something different, romantic, a little edgy, hand engraving but not busy. Here's Nicole's ring design:

Nicole wanted to have diamonds on the band section of the ring also. So I made small Cadillac shapes that the side diamonds would be set within them. The rest of the ring would be hand engraved carrying the shape of the Cadillacs, all around.
